Discerning Signs & Wonders
God still acts in history. The supernatural is real. But not every sign is from God — and not every wonder leads to truth. This is the foundational discernment challenge of our age.

Defining the Phenomenon
What We're Talking About
The Church has always acknowledged the reality of miracles, apparitions, healings, prophecy, tongues, and other supernatural manifestations. These are attested in Scripture, affirmed in Tradition, and documented across twenty centuries of Catholic history. The supernatural is not a fringe belief — it is woven into the fabric of Catholic faith.
At the same time, the Church has always insisted on discernment: the careful, prayerful, doctrinally-grounded evaluation of whether a given supernatural claim is from God, from the human spirit, or from a deceiving spirit. This is not scepticism. It is obedience — the obedience of a Church entrusted with guarding souls.
In our current moment, claims of supernatural signs and wonders are multiplying rapidly — across charismatic communities, social media, online prophetic movements, New Age spirituality, and even secular culture. The ability to discern authentically from counterfeit has never been more essential. This page provides that framework.

Affirming the Supernatural
What Is Real
Before addressing deception, we must firmly affirm what is true. Catholic discernment begins with faith, not suspicion.
- Eucharistic miracles are historically documented — scientifically verified cases of consecrated hosts exhibiting living human cardiac tissue, witnessed across multiple centuries and continents. The Eucharist is the greatest miracle in history.
- Marian apparitions approved by the Church — Lourdes, Fatima, Guadalupe, Akita — carry the weight of ecclesial discernment and have produced verifiable healings, conversions, and prophetic accuracy. Their fruits are documented.
- Healings occur in the name of Jesus Christ — in hospitals, in prayer groups, in the sacraments. The Church's Dicastery for the Causes of Saints has validated miraculous cures as part of the canonisation process for centuries. Healing is real.
- Prophecy and prophetic insight are attested across the lives of the saints — Catherine of Siena, John Vianney, Padre Pio, Teresa of Ávila. These are not anomalies. They are part of the Church's normal supernatural inheritance.
- Charismatic gifts are affirmed in the Catechism (CCC 799–801) as genuine works of the Holy Spirit ordered to the common good of the Church. Tongues, prophecy, healing, knowledge, and discernment are real spiritual gifts.
"These signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will cast out demons; they will speak in new tongues… they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will recover."

Spiritual Risks
Where Things Go Wrong
The existence of authentic supernatural gifts does not mean every claimed manifestation is genuine. Here are the most common patterns of deception — not to generate fear, but to generate vigilance.
The Performance of Power
When supernatural manifestations become spectacle — designed to impress, to draw crowds, to generate excitement — the focus has shifted from God to the gift. Authentic signs point away from the vessel and toward Christ. When they don't, investigate.
Prophetic Words Without Accountability
A prophetic culture without accountability is dangerous. When individuals claim to receive direct divine messages that are never tested against Scripture, never submitted to ecclesial authority, and never evaluated against their track record, the conditions for deception are in place.
Emotional Manipulation Mistaken for the Spirit
Intense music, darkness, crowd psychology, and emotional momentum can produce powerful experiences. These are not evil in themselves — but they can be mistaken for the genuine movement of the Holy Spirit. Feelings are not the measure of truth.
New Revelations That Modify the Gospel
Any supernatural claim that introduces doctrine beyond the deposit of faith — new cosmologies, new paths to salvation, new spiritual hierarchies — fails immediately. The deposit of faith closed with the apostles. No vision, however powerful, changes that.
Signs That Lead Away from the Sacraments
Authentic supernatural gifts always draw the recipient deeper into the sacramental life of the Church — Mass, Confession, prayer, submission to authority. When an experience leads away from the sacraments, away from the Church, or into private spiritual systems, the direction is wrong.
Syncretism Under a Christian Label
The blending of Catholic or Christian language with New Age practices, eastern mysticism, occult techniques, or UAP spirituality is increasingly common. The language of Christ does not sanctify every spiritual practice. Discernment is still required.
Authoritative Clarity
How the Church Discerns
Conformity to Scripture and Tradition
No authentic sign contradicts Sacred Scripture or the defined Tradition of the Church. This is the first and most fundamental test. If a claimed revelation introduces content contrary to the Deposit of Faith, it is false — regardless of its apparent power or beauty.
Submission to Ecclesial Authority
Authentic supernatural gifts work within the Church, not against her. Private revelations and charisms are subject to the discernment of the bishop and ultimately the Holy See. A gift that resists evaluation or claims immunity from Church authority is immediately suspect.
The Fruit Test
'By their fruits you shall know them' (Mt 7:16). The fruits of authentic supernatural gifts include: deeper conversion, humility, increased love for the sacraments, charity toward neighbour, peace in the soul. Counterfeits tend to produce pride, division, spiritual elitism, and instability.
The Christological Test
Every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God; every spirit that does not is not from God (1 Jn 4:2–3). A supernatural source that denies the full humanity and divinity of Christ, or reframes Him as merely one of many spiritual masters, fails the apostolic test.
Humility and Hiddenness
Authentic mystical gifts are typically characterised by hiddenness, reluctance, and deep humility in the recipient. The great mystics — Teresa of Ávila, John of the Cross, Padre Pio — submitted their experiences to their confessors and directors and shrank from public attention.
Time and Consistency
Counterfeit spiritual movements tend to burn bright and fade quickly, or fragment over doctrinal disputes. Authentic movements deepen over time, produce stable communities, remain in communion with the Church, and are recognisable across different cultural contexts.
Practical Formation
How to Test the Spirits
Bring It to a Spiritual Director or Confessor
This is not optional for serious spiritual experiences. A trained, orthodox confessor or spiritual director provides the external verification that no individual can provide for themselves. Self-direction in mystical matters is one of the most reliable paths to deception.
Measure Against Scripture and the Catechism
Open your Bible. Open your Catechism. Does the claimed sign, message, or experience contradict anything clearly taught? If yes — regardless of how beautiful, powerful, or emotionally compelling it was — it is not from God.
Examine the Fruits Over Time
Do not evaluate a spiritual experience immediately after it happens. Give it three, six, twelve months. What has it produced in your life? More humility or more pride? Deeper sacramental life or a private spirituality? Greater charity or greater spiritual isolation?
Ask Where It Leads
Every spiritual experience has a direction. Does it lead toward the Mass, toward Confession, toward submission to your pastor, toward greater love of neighbour? Or does it lead toward a new teacher, a private revelation, a special community that others can't access?
Check the Source's Relationship to the Church
Is the teacher, community, or movement in full communion with the Catholic Church? Do they accept the authority of the local bishop? Have their claimed gifts been submitted to ecclesial evaluation? Refusal of these questions is not humility — it is a red flag.
Pastoral Care
If You're Unsure…
Many Catholics encounter supernatural phenomena — in their prayer life, in their communities, through online content — and feel confused, unsettled, or uncertain. This is normal. Here is what to do.
Do Not Be Afraid
Fear is not the right response to spiritual uncertainty. The Lord does not leave His children without resources. Be calm. Be prayerful. Be patient. The truth will clarify itself over time if you remain close to the sacraments and to sound pastoral guidance.
Seek a Sound Confessor
Find an orthodox, experienced confessor — ideally one trained in spiritual direction. Describe what you have experienced or encountered. Ask for their guidance. This is not weakness. It is the obedience the great mystics modelled.
Read the Classics of Catholic Mystical Theology
The Interior Castle by Teresa of Ávila. The Ascent of Mount Carmel by John of the Cross. The Spiritual Exercises of Ignatius. These are not academic texts — they are survival manuals for the spiritual life, written by people who navigated exactly this terrain.
Stay Close to the Sacraments
Whatever you are navigating spiritually, the answer is always the same: go to Mass more, go to Confession more, pray the Rosary, read the Scripture. The ordinary sacramental life of the Church is the safest ground in every storm.
A Short Prayer
Lord Jesus, give me the grace to love what is true, to test what is uncertain, and to reject what is false — all for the love of Your Church and the salvation of souls. Holy Spirit, gift me with the discernment of spirits. Mary, Seat of Wisdom, intercede for me. Amen.

The Church does not ask you to be afraid of the supernatural. She asks you to be formed in it — to love it rightly, to test it carefully, and to remain anchored in the unchanging truth of the Gospel while the spiritual landscape around you shifts and trembles.
You were made for encounter with the living God. That encounter comes through the Mass, the sacraments, prayer, Scripture, and the communion of the saints — not through spectacular manifestations. Pursue holiness, not experiences. And when the experiences come, bring them to the Church she was given to guard them with you.
