What Signs & Wonders Discernment Means
Discernment of signs and wonders is one of the most critical and most neglected disciplines in the contemporary Church. God works miracles. Heaven sends signs. The supernatural is real. But so is deception — and the enemy works signs and wonders too (2 Thess 2:9). The Catholic tradition offers a rigorous, centuries-tested methodology for telling the difference.
This pillar is not scepticism — it is clarity. The Church does not refuse to believe in miracles; she examines them carefully before affirming them, precisely because she takes the supernatural seriously. The rigour is an act of love for souls who deserve truth, not spiritual entertainment.
Discernment encompasses approved apparitions, Eucharistic miracles, stigmata, incorruptibles, prophetic movements, charismatic phenomena, and the explosion of supernatural claims in the digital age. It requires knowledge of doctrine, knowledge of history, and a willingness to submit personal experience to ecclesial judgment.
The fruit of authentic discernment is not cynicism but wonder rightly ordered. When you know what to look for, every genuine sign of God becomes a thunderclap — because you know its weight and its cost and its source.
The Crisis of Our Age
Why This Matters Now
We live in an age of unprecedented supernatural claims. Apparitions multiply globally. Prophetic movements rise and fracture. UFO disclosure has introduced an entirely new category of alleged contact with non-human intelligence. Social media amplifies every unusual spiritual experience to millions within hours — and almost nothing is submitted for ecclesial examination.
At the same time, many Catholics have swung to the opposite extreme — a rationalised faith that dismisses the miraculous entirely, treating every reported healing, vision, or prophetic word as delusion or manipulation. Both errors are dangerous. Both leave souls unprotected.
The result is a spiritually illiterate generation — susceptible to both the fraud and the genuine article, unable to distinguish Our Lady from a demonic counterfeit, unaware that the Eucharistic miracles of Lanciano and Sokolka constitute some of the most powerful evidence for the faith ever documented.
This pillar restores the Church's ancient, sober, wonder-filled capacity to look at the supernatural and say: this is from God — or this is not. That capacity is not optional in this hour. It is prophetic armament.

Test Every Spirit
The command to discern is apostolic. Not every supernatural phenomenon is from God — the Church has always insisted on rigorous testing.
No New Public Revelation
The deposit of faith was closed with the death of the last apostle. Private revelation may illuminate, but never add to what Christ has given.
Forbidden Divination
Consulting horoscopes, mediums, or any occult practice is gravely contrary to the virtue of religion — it seeks knowledge apart from God.
A Wicked Generation Seeks Signs
Christ warned against sign-seeking as a substitute for repentance. Wonder must lead to worship — never to spiritual tourism.

Know the Deposit of Faith
You cannot discern deviations if you don't know the standard. Study the Catechism, Scripture, and the great doctrinal tradition of the Church.
Observe the Fruit
Does the movement, apparition, or teacher produce lasting conversion, sacramental life, humility, and submission to the Church? These are the marks of authenticity.
Identify Red Flags
New doctrine, rejection of Church authority, sensationalism, financial exploitation, and pride in recipients are classic marks of deception.
Submit to Pastoral Authority
Bring unusual spiritual experiences to a sound confessor or spiritual director. Personal discernment is never the final word — the Church judges.

Ground your prayer in Scripture and the liturgy, not in seeking experiences. Pursue God, not phenomena — the gifts follow obedient pursuit of holiness.
