On the 1st October 2026 The Archbishop of Portland, Oregon (USA), His Grace Archbishop Alexander K. Sample published a courageous pastoral letter to his flock, calling for a return to the Mission of the Church, in parishes, family life, and especially Catholic Education. It is a bold and prophetic letter which speaks to the very crisis faced within our church and institutions, and it is a letter which should be replicated by every bishop, in every diocese around the world.
A Time for Courage
It is easy to look at the challenges facing our world and feel a sense of overwhelming fatigue. We see the confusion of our culture and the drifting of our institutions, yet in this moment of testing, we are called to hold fast to the light of Christ.
Recently, a powerful voice has emerged from the episcopacy, calling the Church back to the basics of our faith. An Archbishop has issued a profound pastoral letter, acting as a clarion call for renewal that challenges us to stop drifting and start living our mission with renewed conviction.
This is the kind of leadership we need today. It is a reminder that we are not meant to merely survive the culture, but to transform it through the power of the Gospel.
The Heart of Education
The Archbishop focuses heavily on the crisis within our classrooms. He reminds us that Catholic education is not merely a social service or a way to teach secular subjects in a different setting.
It is, at its core, an invitation to holiness. When schools lose sight of their primary purpose, they mirror the very confusion they were established to combat. For a deeper look at the root causes of this instability, see The Collapse of Catholic Education.
We must ask ourselves if our schools are producing saints or merely secular citizens. The Archbishop calls for a radical return to the truth that every child is made for God and for nothing less than a life of eternal joy in Him.
A Mission for Every Believer
This renewal is not just the job of the bishops or the teachers. It is a call that extends to every parent, every grandparent, and every person in the pew.
If we are to pass on the faith, we must know it ourselves. To ensure you have the tools to articulate the truth, read more at Theology & Scripture.
We are the custodians of a sacred deposit. That inheritance includes the reality of our communion with the living God and the call to live in the power of the Holy Spirit.
Moving Forward in Hope
The pastoral letter is a sign of life. It demonstrates that the Church has the capacity to be prophetic, to speak the truth with charity, and to steer the ship back toward the harbor of Christ.
We need more bishops to show this same courage and conviction. When the shepherds lead with such clarity, it inspires the flock to move with confidence and purpose.

Let us pray for our leaders and for one another. We are part of something much larger than ourselves, and even in these challenging times, the victory has already been won by the Cross.
